Contraception

At Abortion Acceptance of New Mexico we understand the importance of finding the right birth control method for each individual patient.  Along with the samples and prescriptions available at the clinic, we also have ample information about other types of methods available.   Our trained staff will be accessible to discuss the available methods and establish which would work best for you. Our emphasis is providing accurate information while considering all the circumstances of your unique life situation.

After an abortion is an ideal time to start birth control and we can help you if you decide to do so. However, you will need to continue getting your follow-up birth control through your primary care physician or gynecologist.

We can offer samples or prescriptions for the following methods (for more detailed descriptions click here to see birth control options).

  • Oral Contraceptives (birth control pills): Free samples of several different pills are typically available. We can also provide you with a prescription if we do not have your brand.

  • Nuva Ring:  Free samples of this new intravaginal monthly ring are usually available in the office.

  • Ortho Evra Patch: a prescription for this weekly patch is provided. Not all health plans cover this method.

  • Depo Provera injection: This shot can be given immediately following the procedure and lasts for 3 months.  The fee is $75 but we will bill your insurance if applicable.

  • IUD (Intrauterine Device): If you qualify, this can be placed in the uterus at the time of the procedure. The IUD can last a number of years in place. (call for pricing)

Other options for discussion include:

  • Cervical cap and the Diaphragm :  vaginal barriers that would need to be fitted to your body at the post abortion check up exam. (call for pricing)
  • Male and female condoms and spermicides: prevent pregnancy and are the only barriers against STI’s (sexually transmitted infections)
  • Tubal ligation (occlusion) and Vasectomy: permanent methods of birth control.

Generally, we provide the patient with 2-3 months of the birth control method of her choice, thus giving the patient enough time to set up an appointment with her Primary Care Physician to continue or change the chosen method.

Our staff has a commitment to providing patients with comprehensive birth control education, appropriate methods or referrals for future consideration.
