Medications
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous Oxide is a mild gas which is inhaled to give relaxation and a
feeling of well-being. You may choose to use this medication during the
procedure.
- It allows you to breathe more oxygen than you normally can from the
air, while you enjoy a remarkable depth of relaxation.
- It virtually eliminates the fear, nervousness, and tension sometimes
associated with abortion procedures.
- It drastically minimizes any feelings of discomfort.
- It usually induces a feeling of warmth and security as well as a
pleasant "floaty" sensation.
- It permits needed injections of local anesthetic with little or no
discomfort and with more profound results in most instances.
- It permits you to leave the clinic feeling rested and alert.
- It is not general anesthesia because you are always awake, can follow
directions, and you are in full control of your own behavior.
Sublimaze
You may also receive an injection of Sublimaze - a pain medication which
aids in relaxation and further controls any discomfort you experience. You
will receive the medication just prior to your procedure. It begins to take
effect within seconds, and a pleasant, relaxing, slightly drowsy feeling
lasts about 30 minutes. By the time you leave the clinic, the effect of the
Sublimaze will wear off. However, you should not drive a motor vehicle, nor
operate any machinery for a minimum of two hours.
Versed
You may also receive an injection of Versed. Versed
is a tranquilizing agent
that will increase the calming effect of all the medications. It will
heighten your sense of relaxation and may make you feel very drowsy. You
should not drive or operate machinery for a minimum of 4 hours.
